Francesco Barbaglia aka Crookers is a musical shapeshifter with a discography that spans over two decades, and after a small hiatus he’s returned to cause dance floor ruckus with an EP for Chloé Robinson’s Pretty Weird. It marks the label’s 11th release, and testament to Robinson’s ear for what works in the clubs, it also brings
some legendary names to the fold. ‘Johnny Depp’ features the voice of Mr. Oizo, laced with cinematic synthesisers, a warping bassline and stripped back drums that have fast become a trademark sound of the imprint. While nodding to Crookers early work it also sounds fresh for 2023, and the vocal cuts and twisted melody line create a trippy, mind-bending expedition throughout. ‘They Comin’ returns to the groove, harnessing distorted kicks with subtle swinging hats, an ideal DJ tool for a multitude of dance floors. ‘Johnny Depp’ gets the remix treatment from label mainstays Nikki Nair and DJ ADHD; a fast-paced, high octane rendition that aptly twists up the original with some serious flair and attitude.
